Empowering Aboriginal families to know their rights
No parent should have to navigate one of the most challenging moments oftheir life without understanding their rights.
Know Your Rights (KYR) is a free, community-led resource helpingAboriginal families better understand Australia's child protection system andmake informed decisions about their children. Developed through UNSW researchand shaped by Aboriginal families, organisations and legal experts, it providespractical information, videos, guides and tools in clear, accessible language.
The resource helps families understand what happens at every stage ofthe process, from first contact with child protection authorities through tocourt proceedings, family connection and restoration.
Since launching in 2026, KYR has attracted more than 48,000 visits.Families have used the resource to advocate for their rights, access supportand prepare for critical decisions.
By putting knowledge into the hands of families, KYR is helping shiftpower back to the people who need it most.
